Shaun of the Dead Crew - Nira ParkNira Park is best known for her work as a British producer of television and film. From 1989 to 1995, Park honed her comic sensibilities and business acumen by running the legendary nightclub known as The Comic Strip. In 1992 through 1993, she also worked as a production manager on several television shows, including Space Virgins from Planet Sex, Queen of the Wild Frontier, and Gregory: Diary of a Nutcase. In the latter part of 1995, she decided to branch out and found Big Talk Productions, a production company which employs a staff of four people. Despite their small staff, Big Talk has shown huge results. Park got her start as a producer on the television show Glam Metal Detectives (1995), a sketch comedy show which gave the viewer the impression of channel surfing through various television show parodies. Chief among them was Glam Metal Detectives, about a group of mullet and fishnet-wearing rockers who tour the country in a van and solve mysteries in between hard-rocking gigs. From there, she went on to show her versatility by producing documentaries such as Collectors, (a BBC2 show about collectors of contemporary art in the UK), Travels With My Camera (a 50-minute program for Channel 4), and Rock Wives (a series of interviews with the wives of legendary rock musicians). In 2000, she produced the first episode of the hit BBC series Black Books, starring Dylan Moran as misanthropic bookstore owner, Bernard Black. The show would continue on into 2002 and win the BAFTA award for Best Sitcom. She also produced Spaced, which was co-created by (and starred) Simon Pegg and directed by Edgar Wright. Spaced was another hit for Big Talk Productions, as it received nominations for Best Sitcom by both BAFTA and Montreux. Park would later work with Pegg and Wright on the international smash hit, Shaun of the Dead. Besides being a critical and commercial success, the movie was also nominated for or won over a dozen prestigious awards, including Best Film at the NME Awards, Best British Film at the Empire Awards, and Best Film at the South Banks Awards. She is also producing the upcoming police thriller, Hot Fuzz (starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and directed by Edgar Wright). She will then continue her collaboration with Wright by co-producing the superhero film, Ant-Man, which Wright is scheduled to direct. She also has several other movies in the works with the UK Film Council (specifically FilmFour and BBC Films), and she’s developing two other films with Edgar Wright (Them and Scott Pilgrim‘s Precious Little Life). Big Talk Productions also continues to be an important part of British television, with numerous shows lined up for the future. In 2005, she was named by Variety magazine as one of the "Top Ten Producers to Watch." At the inaugural Hollywood ceremony for the UK Film Council, she was also honored by being selected as one of their "Breakthrough Brits." She was formerly married to British comedian Keith Allen, but the couple are now divorced. | |
